Thrash metal (sometimes shortened to thrash), is an extreme metal subgenre of heavy metal, characterized by having a fast tempo and aggressive. Thrash metal songs typically use low stem tone guitar and percussion that fast.

The lyrics of thrash metal is often the theme of social problems using offensive language and deep, an approach most similar to the hardcore genre. Band "Big Four" or the "Big Four" thrash metal are Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, and Slayer, who is jointly and popularizing the genre in the early 1980's. Others say no longer "Big Four" but a "Big Five" Megadeth, Slayer, Exodus, Pantera, and Metallica.

In Europe the style was brought by three bands from Germany, namely Kreator, Sodom, and Destruction. Testament and Exodus from San Francisco, New Jersey and Overkill from Sepultura from Brazil.

The origins of thrash metal are generally traced to the late 1970's and early 1980's, when some bands began incorporating the sound of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, creating a new genre and developing into its own separate movement from punk rock and hardcore .

The genre is more aggressive than the speed metal. Often mixed metal from one category to the other metal, and there are also some bands that combine musical influences from non-metal genre.
