The band was originally active in the underground music scene, they became well known in the underground since the release of the album Enter (1997). But ever since they released the album Mother Earth who rely on single Ice Queen, Within Temptation became well known in all circles, the album to number 2 in the number of sales in the Netherlands, the next album The Silent Force (2004) and The Heart Of Everything (2007) has always occupied no 1 on the Dutch charts.
The success of the album Mother Earth makes Sharon left his job as a designer at a fashion company. In 1997 released the album Enter, the band was made famous in the European underground and make them appear in Metal festivals are prominent in the Netherlands. They achieved their first major award The Dutch Silver Harp. They started a massive international tour and re-release the album on the label GUN Mother Earth, and the album was re successful in many European countries, especially in Germany. Mother Earth album was awarded platinum and reached # 7 in the rock music charts Europe.

On March 9, 2007 they released the album The Heart Of Everything in the Netherlands and 24 July in the United States. This is the Within Temptation album that circulated in Indonesia for the first time. This album relies single "What Have You Done" with guest star Keith Caputo, from the band Triumph Of Agony (USA). The single "The Howling" before this album came out was the soundtrack for the game The Chronicles Of Spellborn, profit single "Frozen" is used for the NGO Child Helpline International, NGO engaged to protect child victims of domestic violence.
On May 11, 2007 for the first time, Within Temptation concert in the United States, they were opening for a band Lacuna Coil released Karmacode, the concert titled The Hottest Chicks In Metal Tour 2007, this concert is presenting beautiful women of metal music. Jasson Price and Jeff Maki get a chance to interview vocalist Sharon, they think Sharon is a very fun time metal singers were interviewed and were very pretty.
At 5 s / d 23 September 2007 they held a tour in the United States and success. Black Symphony Within Temptation is a magnificent concert on September 22, 2008 in Ahoy, Amsterdam. Accompanied by the Metropole Orchestra, with guest star George Oosthoek (ex-Orphanage), Anneke van Giersbergen (Agua de Annique), Keith Caputo (Life of Agony) and filmed with 14 HD cameras. The album was certified Gold in the Netherlands, was released on DVD and Blu Ray in a number of countries.
On 18 November 2010, the band announced via their website that their new album entitled "The Unforgiving" would be released in March 2011. The concept of this album will be based on the comic book series, written by Steven. O'Connell (BloodRayne & Dark 48) and illustrated by Romano Molenaar (Witchblade, Darkness and X-Men). Each song on "The Unforgiving" was written along Steven's narrative, with characters in the songs reflecting the protagonists comics.
On July 26, 2010, the band announced that they will begin a European tour in early 2011 to support their new release. However, on 26 November 2010, it was announced that due to Sharon's third pregnancy, the tour dates would be moved from early 2011 to ahir 2011.
